Hair and Makeup Tips for Your Portraits

The right hair and makeup will help you feel more confident and relaxed during your portrait session. Additionally, your preparation will pay off through a higher-quality outcome for your portraits. You will want to give yourself plenty of time on portrait day so you do not feel rushed or overwhelmed, and preparing in advance can help make that much easier.

Your hair style should be in line with your typical look. Generally, a natural look will provide for the best photographic outcome. Adding some curls can increase volume and look complimentary overall. You will want to add some hair spray to help control fly-away hairs; consider bringing hair spray with you. Refrain from over-using hair products and hair spray on portrait day to avoid a heavy or sticky look. If you are planning a visit to the salon for a haircut, do so a couple of weeks prior to your session and avoid any drastic changes to your normal style.

I would recommend medium coverage for your makeup to balance your skin tone, smooth pores, and hide blemishes. If your makeup is too light, your skin may look uneven in your photographs; if it is too heavy, your skin may look overdone or cakey. Matte makeup will help to reduce unwanted shine in your photos; avoid shimmery makeup. Also, consider bringing along your powder to touch up any oily spots that may emerge during your session. Neutral shadows and black or brown eyeliners work best and can help accentuate your eyes, as can mascara (free from clumps) or false lashes. Apply your eye makeup a little darker than normal, but do not overdo it. The goal is to help the camera recognize the definition in your face, especially around your eyes. Finish up with lip liner and lipstick that compliments your natural tone and your outfit choice.

Hands should be moisturized and nails should be groomed (trimmed, filed, and buffed). If you are going to paint your nails, a natural color that compliments your outfit choice will look best in your photographs. If you are going to wear shoes which show your feet or toes, be sure to follow the same tips for your feet.

A little preparation will really help you feel great during your portrait session. If you are unsure about your ability to achieve the look you really want, consider hiring a professional to help while you enjoy a little well-deserved pampering!
